What is the role of an HSE manager in a group like Total? How can they help protect people, the environment and company assets? Find out more from Xavier Bontemps, HSE Manager for the Group since October 2018.
[Xavier Bontemps, Senior Vice President HSE]
All accidents can be prevented. Safety Managements is the best school of all management. It involves technique procedures, people when you get that right, you can go a long way.
I see my role as being the following to protect people, the environments and our assets. When I picked up the job on October 1st, a number of things came to mind.
The first humility, given the size and the challenges that Total has.
Second, passion. I can play a small role in changing and improving safety culture.
Three, clearly a bit of experience.
The role of an HSE manager is threefold. Miror, guardian and coach. Mirror, because he holds a mirror to the organization. Guardian, because the HSE manager knows the rules and the practices that HSE must have in the best way. Coach, an HSE manager says things as they are and knows that because he spends a lot of time in the field.
The long term priority for HSE for Total in my view, is to prevent all major accidents.
We need to embed lessons learned in what we do, day in and day out. My word of conclusion is this: safety for me, because safety is a value for all staff and contractors within Total. Safety for you because I expect you to watch my safety and the risks I take and likewise. And at the end of the day and most important safety for all because if all of us have that risk awareness every day, all the time and throughout Total, we will achieve zero accidents.
