Located off the coast of Australia, Ichthys is a major project primarily producing liquefied natural gas (LNG). Condensate gas is extracted from the offshore field and processed on a semi-submersible platform, which separates gas from liquid prior to transporting the gas via a subsea gas pipeline to the LNG plant near Darwin.
Located in the northwest of Australia, Ichthys is a world-class liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. Operated by INPEX in partnership with Total, the project will develop large gas and condensate reserves found deep beneath the seabed in waters over 200km from the northwest coast. LNG in three steps
Extracted from the Ichthys offshore field in the Browse Basin,gas and condensate will be processed on a semi-submersible platform, which will separate the gas and liquids. Next, an 889-km subsea gas pipeline will transport the gas to the Ichthys liquefaction plant, located near Darwin in northern Australia. From there, LNG carriers will ship it to various markets. The bulk of the liquids (condensates) will be stabilized and stored on board a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit at the site of the offshore Ichthys field before being exported by ship.
Production is expected to start in 2017, with the following capacities:
- 8.94 million metric tons of LNG per year
- 1.66 million metric tons of LPG per year
- 104,000 barrels of condensate per day at peak

Developing the Ichthys project enhances our position in liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and contributes to our expansion into growing Asian gas markets. We have also advanced our excellent partnership with INPEX, the project operator. This enables us to share our recognized expertise in the integrated management of large-scale LNG projects.
We have already sold future production volumes, scheduled to begin in 2017.
