France France

Our main operations in France are refining, chemical production and the marketing of petroleum products and related services, as well as the distribution of gas and green power. We are also active in renewable energies and conduct intensive research and development at our seven world-class R&D centers.

We are involved in regional development through Total Développement Régional (TDR), whose mission is to foster and facilitate small business start-ups, takeovers and expansions that create jobs in our host regions.

Lastly, we are strongly committed to corporate philanthropy.

We have discontinued our production operations in France and are now focusing our know-how on three areas:
- Remediating industrial sites (the Induslacq industrial complex and the adjoining areas where gas production wells were previously located)
- Promoting and facilitating other industrial operations at local industrial parks
- Helping SOBEGI, in which we have a 100% interest, strengthen its economic and industrial model in order to ensure the sustainability of the Lacq, Mourenx and Mont industrial complexes

We hold a 27.5% interest in the Fos Cavaou LNG carrier terminal in southern France and a 9.99% interest in the Dunkirk LNG terminal in northern France.

We market natural gas and power to individual and business customers. Our Total Energie Gaz affiliate supplies gas and power to 42,000 and 18,000 business locations, respectively.

Lastly, our 100%-owned Total Spring affiliate supplies gas and green power to 171,000 and 176,000 residential locations, respectively.

We operate six refining and petrochemical facilities:
- The Normandy complex, which comprises the Gonfreville-l’Orcher petrochemical plant and a research center. The site's operations also cover base chemicals and polymers.
- The Donges refinery on France's western coast produces diesel, home heating oil and gasoline from oil sourced mainly from Eastern Europe, West Africa and the North Sea.
- The Feyzin refinery south of Lyon produces diesel, gasoline, home heating oil, naphtha and asphalt. Its products primarily supply France’s Rhone-Alps region, as well as Switzerland and Germany.
- The La Mède facility, which we decided to convert into a biorefinery (to begin operating in 2018). As France’s first biorefinery and one of the largest in Europe, the facility will help meet growing demand for biofuels.
- The Carling Saint-Avold complex in eastern France will eventually become the European center for hydrocarbon resins.
- The Grandpuits refinery near Paris supplies much of the greater Paris region with automotive fuel.

We are active in specialty chemicals through our affiliate Hutchinson, which specializes in elastomer processing.

Our BioTfueL project in Dunkirk focuses on a process to convert a wide variety of biomass resources into second-generation biofuels.

Lastly, we wholly own France-based GreenFlex, which is specialized in helping businesses manage their energy consumption efficiently by combining data intelligence and equipment management and financing expertise.

In the area of research, we are a partner of the Laboratory of Physics of Interfaces and Thin Films (LPICM), a unit run jointly by the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the Ecole Polytechnique engineering school, as well as of the LAAS-CNRS laboratory in Toulouse.

Total is also the driving force behind the Institut Photovoltaïque d’Ile-de-France (IPVF), a photovoltaic R&D center that began its scientific work in 2014 and is currently located on the Paris-Saclay campus.

We have forged a number of partnerships in the biotechnology sector, including:
- Our collaboration with the Grenoble-based Cell & Plant Physiology Laboratory (LPCV), run by the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), on an exploratory bioengineering research project to study microalgae.
- A joint laboratory at the CRES Research Center in Lyon, enabling the development of joint R&D programs on biomolecules.

Lastly, our Solaize R&D laboratory, specialized in chemicals and bio-compound processes, is developing effective products that are also more environmentally friendly.
