We are active in the United States in every business sector of the oil industry, except retail fuel distribution. We also lead community outreach initiatives in the country, with a focus on education and social inclusion.

In the United States, in the Gulf of Mexico, we hold interests in the following fields:  

- Chinook (33.33%), currently in production.
- Tahiti (17%), currently in production.
- Jack (25%), currently in production.
- North Platte (60%), under exploration.
- Anchor Development (32.5%), under exploration.

In the field of shale gas production:
- We operate (100%) the assets in the Barnett Shale Basin in Texas.
- We hold a 25% stake in the joint venture that operates the Utica Basin in Ohio.

Lastly, we carry out research and development (R&D) in the United States, particularly in seismic imaging and reservoir modeling.

Through our Total Gas & Power North America (TGPNA) affiliate, we:
- Trade natural gas, natural gas liquids extracted from Utica reservoirs, petcoke and sulfur produced by the Port Arthur refinery, and electricity.
- Possess liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification capacity at the Sabine Pass LNG terminal in Louisiana.
- Have entered into LNG purchase agreements with Sabine Pass, Cameron LNG and Corpus Christi.
- Hold a 16.6% interest in the Cameron LNG terminal.

We also hold a 20.53% interest in Tellurian Investments Inc., which develops natural gas liquefaction and export projects.

Lastly, we have a 25% interest in Clean Energy Fuels Corp, a leader in supplying the transportation industry with natural gas and renewable natural gas fuel in North America. The company has a network of 550 service stations in North America.
 

The Port Arthur refinery in Texas is where we do all our refining in the United States. It is integrated with a steam cracker in which we have a 40% interest through a joint venture with BASF.

In petrochemicals, we operate:
- One of the world's biggest polypropylene plants (seven production lines) in La Porte, Texas.
- The world’s largest styrene facility in Carville, Louisiana.
- Two high-density polyethylene production lines in Bayport, Texas.

Through a joint venture (50%), we also have a stake in the styrene monomer plant adjoining the Carville facility, as well as a 33.3% interest in Enterprise Products Partners L.P., which operates three propylene splitters in Mont Belvieu, Texas.

Lastly, we have a 50% stake in the Baypol joint venture, which will eventually comprise an ethane cracker, the high-density polyethylene production line in Bayport and a new polyethylene unit, also in Bayport.

We also operate in specialty chemicals through our affiliates Cray Valley (resins) and Hutchinson (elastomer processing).

We operate in the solar and biotechnology sectors in the United States.

In the field of solar energy:
- We are the majority shareholder of SunPower (56.26%), a world leader in the photovoltaic solar power industry. SunPower is active in the home, industrial and commercial rooftop markets and the ground-mounted solar plant market. In particular, SunPower has built the world’s biggest photovoltaic solar plant in the United States, the California Valley Solar Ranch, which can power 100,000 homes.
- We own four production sites and a research center in the country through our wholly owned Saft affiliate, the world leader in the design and production of high-tech batteries for industry.
- We have acquired an interest in AMBRI, a start-up that develops high-temperature (over 300°C) stationary batteries based on liquid metal.

In the area of biotechnology:
- We are a shareholder of Amyris (around 11%), which is developing an innovative technology to convert sugar into building block molecules for fuels and chemicals.
- We have a research and development partnership with the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), a cutting-edge synthetic biology research center that develops processes to convert biomass into biofuels.
- We own Novogy, a start-up that has developed a technology to convert sugar into lipids with a view to producing fuels and chemicals.
- We have an interest in Renmatix, a start-up that has invented a process to deconstruct lignocellulose.

- Lastly, we have our own research unit based in California, called the Bio-Process Platform (BPP).

We have a trading desk based in Houston. It charters tankers sailing to North American destinations, supplies the Port Arthur refinery with crude oil and exports the refinery's heavy fuel oil.
