Results of Total's CSR Program in Myanmar

The CSR program focuses primarily on education, healthcare, local job creation, microfinance and access to energy both for people living near the pipeline area and for all citizens of Myanmar. In addition, Total actively supports a number of progress initiatives, including Myanmar’s application to join the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) standard.

CSR program results:


Public Health

  • One million medical visits made and 183,000 vaccinations given since 1997.
  • Infant mortality rate reduced by 75% since 1997.
  • Mortality rate of the main local illnesses reduced by between 75% and 95% since 1997, depending on the illness.
  • One hospital and 22 clinics built.
  • Funding given to the nation-wide blindness program since 2001:
    • ​NGO Helen Keller International, with the support of the Yadana project, has been coordinating the Eye Health Initiatives project since 2001 to help the Myanmar Ministry of Health achieve its goal of halving incidences of blindness by 2020.
    • In 2014, the Helen Keller International program examined 185 patients and performed cataract surgery on 24.
  • ​Funding given to the nation-wide HIV prevention program since 2005: ​
    • The Integrated HIV Care (IHC) program is the product of a partnership between the public sector (International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease and the Myanmar Ministry of Health) and the private sector (Yadana).
    • The program contributes to 25% of antiretroviral treatments (ARTs) available in the country, for a total of 21,005 patients.
    • The financial support of the Yadana program alone covers 2,500 patients, which equates to almost 12% of patients on ART.


Education

  • 51 school buildings constructed and another 72 renovated.
  • 10,624 students benefited from improvements to school infrastructure.
  • School attendance doubled.
  • Number of teachers tripled since the start of the program.


Economic Development


Support for local agriculture

In 2014:

  • 3,715 people received training in veterinary and farming skills from members of the Yadana CSR program and external partners.
  • 7,572 plants produced in the Yadana crop farm were sold to farmers at market price.
  • 366,650 veterinary treatments were delivered to livestock farmers in the pipeline region, including 182,758 vaccinations.

Micro-finance :

  • 2,816 loans granted to 2,045 households in 2014.


Access to Energy


The range of Awango solar products were introduced for distribution and sale through local resellers and NGOs in July 2013. As a result:

  • 35 local entrepreneurs have been trained in selling the range of Awango solar lamps and products.
  • 3,117 lamps had been sold throughout Myanmar at end-2014.


Environmental Protection


Since 1998, the CSR program has played an active role in the Tanintharyi Nature Reserve Project (TNRP). Located in the pipeline area, this nature reserve is one of the largest in Myanmar.

  • Objective: protect the area and maintain its biodiversity while contributing to sustainable development in the local communities.
  • 1700 square kilometers of protected area.
  • Three financial backers:
    • Total E&P Myanmar
    • PCML (Petronas)
    • PTTEPI (Petroleum Authority of Thailand Exploration & Production International)
  • $1.8 million in funding for the 2013-2017 period.
