World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

11/17/2017

Solidarité victimes de la route

Total is supporting the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, adopted by the United Nations in 2005. This year’s theme is “2020 Target: Reduce Road Fatalities AND Serious Injuries by 50%.”

Road crashes are the eighth-leading cause of death around the globe, with 3,500 people killed each day and up to 50 million people suffering non-fatal injuries each year. On this day of remembrance, our thoughts go out to the victims of road traffic accidents and their families.

Through our engagement, we also hope to remind everyone that individually they can help make roads safer.

Road safety: a long-standing commitment for Total

  • Safety is more than a priority at Total — it’s a cornerstone of our collective principles.
  • In October 2016, we signed a national call to action by French businesses to promote road safety.
  • We are a member of the Global Road Safety Partnership, which brings together institutions (the World Bank, WHO, etc.), NGOs and the private sector.
  • We have adhered to the UN Decade for Action for Road Safety 2011-2020.
  • We regularly conduct awareness and education campaigns for our employees, especially during vacation periods, offering guides and arranging onsite events and more. We frequently partner with French road safety NGO La Prévention Routière.
  • We provide training — defensive driving and eco-driving — for employees involved in road transportation.
  • Our Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Pouyanné, is a member of the FIA High Level Panel for Road Safety. Created by Jean Todt, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, this initiative aims to help reduce deaths on the world’s roads by 50% by 2020. This exceptional target is recognized under the 20130 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
