We have formed partnerships with many Japanese companies worldwide, in oil and gas exploration and production licenses, gas liquefaction plants and pipelines. We notably work with INPEX, in Australia, to develop the Ichthys gas and condensate field, whose reserves will supply 70% of the Japanese market

We are also partners with Mitsui in the Tempa Rossa oil field (50%, operator) in southern Italy.

We market liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Japan’s top gas and power utilities through our interests in about ten LNG plants worldwide.

Through our affiliate, we also help supply the country via direct sales of LNG sourced from our global asset portfolio.

Through our local affiliates, we market:
- Automotive, industrial and marine lubricants
- Auto racing products and special fuels
- Automotive and jet fuel

Japan is a major market for Total's solar business. We are active in the country through Total Solar and our affiliate SunPower (56.26%), which sells solar modules under retail agreements with Toshiba in the residential segment, and through its own network of resellers. We offer rooftop and solar farm solutions that are adapted to the needs of this space-restricted country.

Under a partnership with the ISE food group, Total Solar, which bought its interest from our SunPower affiliate, has begun construction of Nanao, our first directly owned solar power plant in the country, located on the Noto Peninsula in western Japan.

In addition, our affiliate Saft (100%) mainly markets rail battery systems, as well as primary lithium batteries, in the country.

We market polymers and base chemicals out of the offices of our joint venture Hanwha Total Petrochemicals (South Korea). We also market petrochemicals sourced from our Qatari and South Korean joint ventures.

In specialty chemicals, our affiliate Hutchinson (elastomers processing) has an office in Tokyo to liaise with its partners and Japanese automakers.

We sell crude oil to Japanese refiners, as well as naphtha (a distillation product).
