Medical researches with the Institut Pasteur
Infectious diseases affect hundreds of millions of people, especially in Africa and Asia. To fight this scourge, Total is funding research at the Institut Pasteur in Paris.
As part of its corporate philanthropy agreement with the Institut Pasteur, Total will provide assistance in two forms: upstream and on the ground – in other words, by funding scientific research into the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, and by direct action in developing countries in the form of training for medical and paramedical personnel.
Total will devote 10 million euros to these activities between now and 2010.
The partnership will allow the Institut Pasteur, one of the world’s leading biomedical research institutes, to continue its work on infectious diseases around the world.
Total is already working in countries affected by infectious diseases via its local divisions, which have been especially active in the fight against AIDS. It is now funding four research programmes in a total funding package of 2.5 million euros over a five-year period. The agreement with the Institut Pasteur was signed in October 2005.
Each of the four programmes addresses a specific goal: the fight against hepatitis C, early diagnosis of diarrhoea in children, vaccinations against dengue fever, and cell death resulting from these infections. All programmes will be implemented by the Institut Pasteur’s international cross-disciplinary teams.
