"Venice and the Islamic World" exhibition
Each culture has its own roots, but it can only really grow via contact with other cultures. “Venice and the Islamic World” is an exhibition that illustrates the importance of cultural dialogue founded on the exchange of knowledge and values as well as goods.
For centuries, the unique geographic location of Venice between West and East gave this city privileged contact with the most powerful Islamic dynasties. The artistic refinement and scientific advances of Islamic civilization considerably influenced Venetian attitudes toward Eastern culture, and these influences can be seen in the glass, leather and fabric of Venice. Avid for fresh knowledge, the traders and craftsmen of Venice were quick to imitate and learn the techniques of the Orient.
“Venice and the Islamic World”, an exhibition at the Institut du Monde Arabe, seeks to illustrate how the artists and craftsmen of Venice borrowed from their Eastern counterparts, and how the East in turn found inspiration in Western – and especially Venetian – art.
