  According to the Registry Office in Cherchell, Algeria, she was born Fatima Imalayene, a name that suggests she was destined to get right to the top. In those days, once a girl reached puberty she was usually locked away until a husband was found for her. Happily for Fatima, her school-teacher father was more enlightened than some, and she was sent first to a Koranic school in Algiers and then to teachers’ college at Sèvres, outside Paris.
