Most of us have
at some time dreamed of doing research. Research for its
own sake, or applied research… Research that goes
beyond geographical and intellectual boundaries. This
issue of Energies takes an in-depth look at the
intense current debate in many countries on the role of
researchers in contemporary society. Our aim is to place
in perspective the scientific and economic issues involved
in research in general and R&D in particular. And
to provide an insight into some of the scientific breakthroughs
that are likely to change our lives radically over the
coming decades: humanity’s exploration of the infinitely
small world of nanotechnology; the study of genetics in
general and the human genome in particular; and biotechnology.
All these fields of research are already having, or will
soon have, a direct or indirect impact on the R&D
programs of major energy and chemicals companies such
as Total. |

The objective of
the Group’s research effort is to master the techniques
that will enable us to satisfy the energy needs of both
current and future generations, developing new and better
motor fuels and other hydrocarbon products as well as
the new materials of the future which are made possible
by nanotechnology. These are indeed important fields of
research for life on Earth.
We hope you will find this fifth issue of Energies
both enjoyable and stimulating.
