Although the oceans cover more than three-quarters of the Earth’s surface (or 360.7 million square kilometers), only a tiny portion of that area has so far been explored. Clearly, virtually the entire ocean has yet to be discovered, in all its extremes – the very deep as well as the very small. But what for? At stake in this quest is no less than an opportunity to discover new plant and animal species, energy resources and therapeutic molecules… perhaps even the origin of life and the future of humanity. Besides, the sea is an inexhaustible source of dreams. A source that we can only preserve through our painstaking efforts to protect its treasures, for the benefit of all mankind.
