Perhaps scientists will one day succeed in providing proof
that the climate changes we are currently experiencing are
caused by human activities. Today, alerted by a converging
stream of clues, the scientific community is calling for
preventive steps and urging the international community to
take the necessary measures. In line with the policy we stated
right from the beginning, of using this magazine to further
the debate on major social issues, Energies has decided to
explore this question in detail, naturally inviting input
from all major participants in the debate that has been triggered
by the Kyoto Protocol on climate change. Our new magazine,
with which readers are now becoming familiar, will also talk
about Total and its activities throughout the world, its
past and present, and its active commitment to humanity. |

This third issue of Energies
focuses on issues that are affecting both humankind and our
planet in diverse and profound ways, giving extensive coverage
to such subjects as pollution, which has spread so far that
it has even reached the foothills of Mt Everest, and access
to fresh water, which is harvested by Namibian desert-dwellers
using mist nets. After all, a company like Total cannot remain
aloof from major social issues that concern our whole planet.
That’s how we see our magazine, but we would like to hear
from our readers too. We welcome more of the reactions and comments
that flowed in after the first two issues.
We hope you will find this issue interesting.
