Since 2000, sharp economic growth worldwide, triggered in part by the economic growth of countries such as China, India and Brazil, has significantly heightened the demand for energy. Oil and gas demand has risen by 1.5% and 2.5% respectively each year. 2004 marked a surge in this trend: oil consumption increased by 4% from 2003 to reach 3 million barrels per day (MBD), a third of it being used by China.
