It doesn't take a genius to foresee that energy will be a crucial issue throughout the 21st century. The figures leave no room for doubt: at the current rate of growth, world energy consumption (nearly 10 billion tons of oil equivalent per year, abbreviated as: 10 Gtoe/year) is expected to double or even triple by 2050.
