Total: a responsible production

Total has made environmental stewardship a priority, and recently demonstrated that commitment by ranking first among oil and gas companies worldwide on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, one of the major indexes for socially responsible investment.
Oil sands development brings with it several major environmental challenges, including CO2 emissions, water consumption, land footprint and tailings management.
Keenly attuned to these challenges, we have deliberately selected technologies that deliver the best available environmental performance, right from the project design phase.
Aside from the Surmont in situ project, none of our projects will go into production before 2016.
We will use the interim period to further enhance our technologies and develop innovative solutions that will enable us to reduce our environmental impact to an even greater extent.
