Capture and geological storage of CO2

Our actions in the field of CCS

What are our actions to reduce the impact of our activities on the climate ? How do we take part in developong CO2 capture and storage technology ?

Total's aim is to reduce the overall impact of our activities on the Earth’s climate. The main thrust of our action is to control and reduce our emissions.

This means reducing the flaring of gases produced together with oil, improving the energy efficiency of our facilities and the products we manufacture, and helping to develop low-carbon energies.

As a complement to these programs, Total is taking an active part in developing CO2 capture and storage technology.

The industrial activities involved in the oil/gas chain (i.e. everything from extraction to delivery of the finished product) consume between 10% and 15% of each barrel of oil originally produced. By virtue of these activities, Total generates significant amounts of CO2. We also have expert knowledge of geology. So we naturally became interested very early in the capture and geological storage of CO2.

We want to help develop and master CCS technology because it is essential to the long-term growth of our own business but also because it can be applied by many other industries.

So we are mobilizing all our know-how to ensure that CCS is efficient, safe and usable on a large scale.

To this end we are taking part, in partnership with various expert players, in a number of research programs and operational projects of both national and international scope. Our aim here is to pool resources and expertise and to share the results, thus benefiting all stakeholders.
