Capture and geological storage of CO2

Efforts to curb climate change

Efforts to curb climate change require a number of different and complementary approaches. The development of CO2 capture and storage technologies is one of the solutions that must be implemented if we are to achieve our goal.

There are several obstacles still to be overcome before CCS can be widely used:

  • costs (particularly at the capture stage)must be reduced so as to make the whole process competitive,
  • demonstration projects on an increasingly large scale must be set up,
  • legal and regulatory issues must be settled so as to clarify the conditions required for storage management and to determine long-term responsibility for storage sites.

Furthermore, the combat against climate change is also largely the responsibility of governments, so there is a need for private enterprise and the public sector to pool their expertise and set up joint funding so as to accelerate the development and implementation of this technology. CCS would:

  • sharply reduce the amount of CO2 emissions released by industrial facilities using fossil fuels,
  • account for up to 30% of the reduction in world CO2 emissions generated by fossil fuel combustion by 2050.
