Capture and geological storage of CO2
Monitoring and information sharing
The Lacq demonstration project will gather a large volume of data that will help to improve future CO2 capture and storage initiatives. As such, it has generated a lot of interest among the international scientific community. Indeed, in October 2009 the project was accredited by the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum, an intergovernmental body responsible for promoting CCS development. This confirms the technical and scientific added value expected from the Lacq project.
Right from the planning stage of the project we saw this innovative experiment in terms of the pooling of expertise and the sharing of results. As a result, we drew on the combined skills and expertise of the public sector: French universities, National Research Center (CNRS), French Petroleum Institute (IFP), National Research Agency (CO2 program), Mineral Resources Research Center (CREGU) in Nancy, etc.
We are also placing our data bank and our facilities at the disposal of outside scientists for any CCS research programs they may undertake.
Last but not least, in 2007 we set up a Scientific Oversight Committee for the project, bringing together government scientists and independent experts to oversee all scientific aspects of the Lacq experiment and ensure that the results were diffused among the scientific community. >> Focus on the Scientific Oversight Committee.
Focus on the Scientific Oversight Committee
Members of the Committee are drawn from: the French Academy of Sciences; the Ministry for Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and the Sea; the Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME); the Bureau for Geological and Minerals Research (BRGM); the French Petroleum Institute (IFP) and Total. Its main missions are:- to oversee the scientific aspects of the project;
- to verify that scientific and technological needs are addressed, particularly regarding the storage phase;
- to ensure that information is shared with the academic community;
- to anticipate issues that might be of concern to civil society;
- to identify opportunities for cooperation with other bodies working on CO2 capture and storage.
