The Disaster in Toulouse French Red Cross Implements Long-Term Program with Support from TotalFinaElf
Print
Nov. 08, 01

The French Red Cross, which has been active on the scene of the disaster in Toulouse since September 21, is pursuing its local initiatives thanks to public contributions totaling nearly FRF 7 million and the FRF 20 million emergency fund created by TotalFinaElf.

The mobilization of 1,300 volunteers for these initiatives represents 3,800 days of work, or more than 45,000 hours.

In addition to the FRF 10 million that TotalFinaElf contributed to local authorities the day after the disaster, these resources have made it possible to provide the following:

¿ FRF 8 million in support vouchers
Red Cross first-aid workers have met with residents left homeless in the eight districts of Toulouse that were the most seriously affected by the explosion. In all, 11,000 forms certifying homeless status have been filed so that emergency material aid can be distributed.

¿ More than FRF 2 million for the families of disaster victims
Priority financial aid totaling more than FRF 2 million has been allocated for bereaved families whose deceased relatives did not work for the TotalFinaElf Group. The related documents are being processed and the families concerned will be eligible to receive additional support for the victims’ children.

¿ Emergency aid for people injured by the explosion
The Red Cross, with TotalFinaElf, will provide emergency aid for the individuals most seriously injured by the explosion.

¿ Support in applying for disaster compensation
Aware of the difficulties experienced by people with inadequate or no insurance coverage, the Red Cross—in collaboration with TotalFinaElf’s insurance specialists—has set up a mobile unit to help disaster victims file applications in order to expedite compensation.

¿ A task force supported by local mediators
Red Cross volunteers are still on site listening to residents and furnishing assistance. Young local mediators from disadvantaged neighborhoods, recruited by the Red Cross under youth employment contracts, are supporting these initiatives in the Raynerie district.

Volunteers of the Croix-Rouge Ecoute support hotline are also available to help victims at 0 800 858 858.
