New Major Gas Discovery in Bolivia
Print
Jun. 08, 99
TOTAL Exploration Production Bolivie S.A., MOBIL Boliviana de Petróleos, and TESORO Bolivia Petroleum Company, announce that they have discovered major natural gas reserves on Block XX West, located in the Tarija department (Gran Chaco province) in southern Bolivia. TOTAL is operator on the block with a 41% interest.

The first well drilled on the block, the ITAU X-1 (A) exploration well, has been drilled to a depth of 5,443 meters and encountered a 250-meter thick Devonian-age formation known locally as Huamampampa. In a drillstem test, the well flowed gas at the rate of around 865,000 cubic meters per day and 830 barrels of condensate per day through a 48/64-inch choke. Under normal operating conditions this well could yield 2 million cubic meters of gas and 2,000 barrels of condensate a day.

Further appraisals are being conducted and should provide a more precise indication of the discovery's potential within a few months.

Also in Bolivia, TOTAL has recently made other highly promising discoveries on the adjoining San Alberto block. These reserves strategically position TOTAL to supply regional gas markets, with a priority focus on Brazil, which is now accessible via the recently commis-sioned Bolivia-Brazil gas pipeline.
