Jun. 15, 98

Elf concluded an agreement on June 8, with the Azerbaijani state oil company Socar, Mobil and Agip for the construction of a drilling platform for exploration in the Caspian Sea

The platform's different parts will be built in Singapore and Baku. The elements from Singapore will be shipped via the Don-Volga Canal and all the platform's components will be assembled at Socar's facilities in Baku.

Elf's operations in Azerbaijan are in keeping with its strategy of developing a third group of producing subsidiaries outside its traditional areas of Europe and Africa.

Elf is present in Azerbaijan as operator of the Lenkoran-Talysh Deniz permit with a 40% interest and a 10% interest in the Shakh Deniz permit.
