TOTAL has successfully completed a delineation well (DJ481) on the Jusepin field in Venezuela. Production tests conducted on the well yielded a flow rate of 7,600 barrels per day (b/d) of oil.

The Jusepin field, located in eastern Venezuela, came on stream in April 1997, with an initial flow rate of 10,000 b/d of oil.

The new well should be hooked up to the field's processing facilities in early July 1998, thus increasing output at Jusepin to more than 30,000 b/d of oil.

TOTAL is operator on the Jusepin field with a 55% stake, in a partnership with Amoco (45%), as part of a 20-year service contract signed in November 1993 with PDVSA, the Venezuelan national oil company. Elsewhere in Venezuela, TOTAL and Amoco are partners on the Punta Pescador exploration permit, which lies north of the Orinoco delta.

TOTAL, with a 47% interest, is also lead manager of the Sincor Project to develop extra-heavy crude from the Orinoco region. Production is expected to start up in 2000.

These different operations make TOTAL one of the leading foreign investors in Venezuela.
