After receiving marketing approval in Europe in August 1997 and in the US in October 1997, Aprovel® (irbesartan), a new hypertensive agent from Sanofi Research, has been marketed in France since January 16, 1998 by the sales forces of Sanofi and Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Aprovel® has been co-developed by Sanofi and Bristol-Myers Squibb since 1993. It is a powerful and selective angiotensin II receptor antagonist (AIIRA), a new class of medicines for the treatment of hypertension.

This anti-hypertensive agent has shown efficacy that increases with dose, while maintaining placebo-level tolerability at all doses.

Aprovel® was first marketed in the UK and Germany in September 1997, and then was launched in other European countries: the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. The US launch took place in early November 1997.

Sales of Aprovel® generated by Sanofi and Bristol-Myers Squibb in 1997 amounted to FRF 140 million.

Aprovel® will soon be launched in Italy and in Spain.
