The Ichthys Project (Australia)

Ichthys is a complex, world-class project in the Liquefied Natural Gas sector. Field infrastructure will consist of a subsea multi-wells development connected to a semi-submersible processing facility

Total is a partner in the Ichthys LNG project operated by Inpex. LNG is one of the sectors strategic for our future growth. The operator is planning to start production in late 2016-early 2017 with a capacity of 8.4 million metric tons per year (Mt/y).

Total holds a 30% equity stake in the project. The other partners are:

  • Inpex (66.7%)
  • Tokyo Gas (1.575%)
  • Osaka Gas (1.2%)
  • Chubu Electric Power (0.35%)
  • Toho Gas (0.42%)

With the Ichthys development, Total enhances its position in LNG production and secures a new gateway to Asian markets.

This complex, world-class project with 50 wells will tap the vast gas and condensate reserves that lie in 260 m of water depth in the Browse Basin, off the northwest coast of Australia. After preliminary treatment on a gigantic semi-submersible processing facility, the gas will be piped to a liquefaction plant in Darwin (capacity: 8.4 Mt/y). Condensates will be stored on board an FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) unit and exported by ship.

This project gives Inpex the benefit of Total’s recognized expertise in the integrated management of very large-scale LNG projects, within the framework of an exemplary partnership agreement.
