Total, a leader in high value-added products

Some products such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and lubricants are mass marketed to a broad cross-section of the public. Others, such as specialty fluids, asphalt, additives and specialty fuels, are developed for cutting-edge applications or even custom designed. Manufactured in refineries and other dedicated units, our specialty products benefit from a broad range of technical and marketing skills and expertise. Sold through our networks and partners, they are now available in nearly 150 countries.

We are expanding and solidifying our global positions, especially in Central and Eastern Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Specialty additives and fuels for industry and auto racing

Our Specialty Additives and Fuels teams serve several markets, creating additives for cold resistance, enhanced combustion and more efficient, cleaner-burning fuel, fuels and lubricants for racecars and specialty fuels for automakers, original equipment manufacturers, aerospace manufacturers and others.

The exception is often the rule in these areas. Technological expertise, the ability to innovate and an understanding of the specific needs of each customer are all brought to bear to devise custom solutions.

All automakers want to safeguard their trade secrets. But several industry leaders, including Renault, Citroën and Peugeot, count on us to optimize the overall performance of increasingly complex mechanical systems.

Although energy efficiency and environmental protection are the core priorities today, Total's engineers can also be found in the field and on the racetrack, where products show what they can do when pushed to the limit.

Formula One, World Rally Championship, Moto GP and other races are laboratories whose advances trickle down to consumers. Just listing the illustrious teams supported by Total Motorsports over more than 30 years highlights the effectiveness of this integrated partnership between refiners, researchers and engineers.

More than 50 years of experience with aviation fuels

Total has been supplying fuel for airplanes since 1955 and now serves some 270 airports in more than 70 countries with two main products. Our Jet A-1 fuel is made for turbojets and other turbines. It is used by close to 200 airlines worldwide, by manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers, and by the air forces of several nations. Avgas 100 LL is marketed to airfield managers, to fuel the piston engines of light aircraft.

Air Total, our network of subsidiaries and specialized external partners, works with a wide array of customers.

Compliance with strict specifications and consistent quality are decisive factors in civil, military and recreational aviation. In every airport at which we operate, our inspectors conduct regular audits of each link in the chain, right up to the tanks on airplane wings. Fuelling stations are operated by personnel trained by our quality assurance engineers.

High performance asphalt for roads, industry and construction

A heavy byproduct of crude oil refining, asphalt has multiple applications including, obviously, roads and highways, auto race tracks and sidewalks, but also playing and recreational fields, ship hull insulation, and sealing components for roofs and water storage tanks.

We market more than 200 different products around the world and have two flagship product lines. The Styrelf® formulation combines standard asphalt with elastomers, which confer exceptional elasticity, cohesion and adherence. One of its spinoffs, Biostyrelf, now contains renewable plant-based components. Kromatis®, used for urban road networks, can be cold-mixed or hot-mixed and bulk colored. Its application helps delimit traffic areas more clearly and increases safety for all road users.

In keeping with the expectations of construction companies and municipalities, Total R&D is working to make asphalt more recyclable and lower its application temperatures, in order to reduce the amount of energy expended in its use and limit disamenities affecting both the workers who handle it and the environment.

Heavy fuel oils: optimized solutions for industry and power generation

Because they pack a lot of energy into a small volume, heavy fuel oil and high-viscosity fuels are two groups of products destined primarily for power generation, district heating and energy-intensive industries such as cement plants, sugar refineries, paper mills and the agrifood industry. At the same time as sulfur content is being reduced, the reformulation and addition of additives to fuel oils cut the particulate emissions associated with their use. We also offer customers audits, training and technical support services to help them optimize processes and equipment maintenance, in order to reduce consumption and emissions. Our teams promote proven denitrification solutions for flue gas to curtail nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

High-value-added specialty fluids that meet a number of needs

Total offers a wide range of highly refined, highly hydrogenated specialty fluids. Technical fluids incorporated into sealant, printing ink and cosmetic formulations, drilling fluids that minimize environmental impact and crop protection oils are a few examples. Made by our Lindsey refinery in the United Kingdom and the Oudalle plant in France, they are used in 30 different applications.

LPG, a flexible, safe and versatile form of concentrated energy

Butane and propane are gaseous at ordinary temperatures and atmospheric pressures, but take up as much as 274 times less space when pressurized or chilled. As such, these non-toxic liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) with a high heating value are very easy to transport, store and use in a number of applications including petrochemical production, farming, industry, homes (cooking, hot water, heating) and vehicle propulsion (LPG fuel, also sometimes known as autogas).

LPG is also a feasible alternative for some traditional energy sources, such as wood, paraffin and organic waste, in a number of developing countries. Its use improves people's living conditions and helps fight deforestation.

Total sells LPG in bulk or bottles in a growing number of countries, often under the Totalgaz brand, both directly and through local partners.

We are proficient in all LPG activities, including production, trading, shipping, maritime terminals, interim storage, depots and filling centers, delivery trucks, service stations and other retail outlets. A very extensive network and robust logistics keep us close to consumers.

In India - a high-potential market for LPG - a joint venture created by Total and our local partner began commercial operation in 2008 of an import terminal and a 60,000-metric-ton underground storage cavern, the country's first.

Lubricants for all types of machinery and every requirement

Total and Elf lubricants have racked up quite a record in Formula One, World Rally Championship (WRC) and Moto GP races, the world's toughest proving grounds.

This technological excellence is one of the assets Total Lubricants is building on to expand internationally, via local subsidiaries or distributors doing business in nearly 160 countries.

We are one of the few suppliers in the sector able to simultaneously offer base oils, automotive and industrial lubricants, greases, antifreeze and coolants, plus the services required to meet the needs of each category of user.

We have developed the Fuel Eco line of lubricants with formulations for all types of vehicles and machinery, from cars and trucks to farm and construction machinery to fishing boats. Their use reduces friction and thus wear and tear, boosts the energy efficiency, life and availability of machinery, and cuts per-kilometer and operating hour costs. In another application made possible by our R&D teams, we market a line of renewable-based biolubricants for chainsaws, tractors and other machinery.

Marine fuels and lubricants: a global supply chain serving maritime traffic

Most of our marine fuel oil and diesel is delivered by barges, known as lighters, that pull up alongside the ships. They can also be delivered via pipeline or tank truck when the ships are docked.

Total Marine Fuels is active in both physical fuelling and trading, to efficiently meet the needs of its ship owner, charterer, conveyor and other customers worldwide, particularly in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the French Pacific Territories.

With over 50 years of experience, our Total Lubmarine business markets a comprehensive line of lubricants for all types of vessels, available in more than 70 countries and roughly 700 ports.

Bad weather and delayed port calls make for constant changes in ship fuelling schedules. To deal with this day-to-day challenge, Total Marine Fuels and Total Lubmarine teams have made responsiveness their watchword.
