Health and environment
At Total, protecting the health of employees and people living or working near our facilities is a top priority. That’s why we strive to manage and reduce the health impacts of our operations.
The first step consists of a complete inventory and assessment of potential releases and discharges - such as air emissions, liquid effluents and waste - from our facilities.
Our aim is to identify the measures to be implemented across the life of projects to reduce their impacts. This process is part of the environmental impact assessment carried out prior to all projects.
Regular measurements and monitoring are performed throughout operations, including end-of-life, to detect any variations and, where necessary, allow us to implement corrective measures.
We are directing our efforts primarily at:
- Curbing air emissions from our facilities, with a particular focus on sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Improving air quality around our facilities
- Improving water discharge quality.
Preserving water resources
- Reclaiming contaminated sites and land, so that operations can continue or new operations begin without risk to health.
Reclaiming sites
- Reducing and treating our waste.
Optimizing our waste management
