Total Publishes a Dedicated Briefing Paper on Human Rights in Its Operations

12/09/2016

“Respect for human rights is one of our three key business principles. It guides our conduct in the more than 130 countries where we operate, and we work to ensure that these principles become reality on the ground for our employees, contractors and suppliers, as well as for all other stakeholders,” explains our Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Pouyanné, in his message in the Human Rights Briefing Paper.

The briefing paper, prepared using the U.N. reporting framework and in response to the expectations of Total’s stakeholders, is the first of its kind produced by an international oil and gas company. It publicly reports on our approach to embedding respect for human rights in our operations. And it concentrates on three broad and important focal areas:

  • Human Rights in the Workplace
  • Human Rights and the Local Communities
  • Human Rights and Security

For each of these points, the briefing paper summarizes Total’s policy, awareness raising and training, and due diligence actions. The paper transparently explains the problems encountered, providing several examples.
