Myanmar and Thailand: Forging Stronger Ties

02/17/2017

Total's presence in Myanmar is making it possible to rise to the crucial challenge of increasing gas production and supplying Myanmar and neighboring Thailand with safer, less carbon-intensive energy.

Yadana is by far Myanmar's highest producing field and currently supplies enough gas to meet around 12% of Thailand's demand, making it the country's primary source of imports. The project also provided a model for the two gas developments that followed it, Yetagun and Zawtika, where production exports are governed by long-term contracts with state-owned PTT of Thailand. Yadana's production has therefore established an important, long-term economic link between Thailand and Myanmar. It has also served as a powerful driver for economic development in the two countries and for the regional integration of Myanmar, which had too long been isolated from Southeast Asia's assertive growth.
