The principles underlying human resources management at Total are non-discrimination, promotion of diversity and equal opportunity, ongoing employee dialogue and skills development. These objectives guide all the efforts of the Group and its subsidiaries to attract, motivate and retain the talented men and women we need to expand geographically and rise to new energy challenges.
At end-2007, Total had 96,442 employees across its consolidated companies of which 62% non-French nationals.

Promoting Diversity and Fighting Discrimination
With employees of 133 different nationalities, Total is a multicultural company. Despite this, we still need to increase the number of non-French managers. In 2007, 22% of our senior executives were non-French nationals. Our goal for 2010 is to raise that figure to 25%.
Women are also a focus of our diversity policy. We are aiming to have 11% of our senior management positions held by women in 2010, up from 8% in 2007.
To employ a workforce that is representative of civil society, we are continuing our efforts to fight discrimination of any type, support the disabled and hire and nurture local nationals.
Training As a Core Responsibility
Training equips each Total employee to effectively meet the challenges of increasingly complex projects, evolving energy issues and the geographical expansion of our operations. All employees are entitled to training tailored to their needs throughout their careers. Training is especially intensive in our fast-growing areas, with an average number of training days per employee of 13 in Africa, 13.9 in the Middle East and 10.5 in Asia, compared with a company-wide average of 6.3.
