Supplying Energy that Contributes to Economic and Social Development

Supplying Energy that Contributes to Economic and Social Development Fournir l’énergie qui contribue au développement économique et social

The global population continues to grow. By 2040, there will be 9 billion people on Earth. How can we encourage the economic, social and human development of this growing population? Our response is to deliver energy that is safer, more available and more affordable.

Total is Committed to Providing Safer Energy

Because our operations are inherently exposed to numerous risks, we are championing safety as our highest value.

This means ensuring the safety of our employees and stakeholders, and our facilities and products. Our objective is to become the benchmark for safety in our industry. To achieve this goal, we apply a structured, systematic safety approach in our daily operations based on a shared culture and common rules. This approach allows us to maintain the trust and support of States, civil society and local populations in our host regions. They ensure the sustainability of our activities.

The energy that we produce must be safe, both for people and the planet. This is why the environment is an integral part of our development model. Maintaining it is both a prerequisite for our social license to operate and a source of competitiveness for our businesses.

Total is Committed to Providing More Available Energy

To meet the energy needs of a growing population, we need to make energy more available. How do we do this? By continuing to invest in oil and gas because these resources will remain at the center of the world’s energy needs in the decades to come. In particular, we actively participate in the development of natural gas markets, which are growing fast due to robust electricity demand. Our objective is for gas to account for the largest share of our production mix.

In addition, we are investing in renewable sources, such as solar and bioenergies, as well as in the electricity storage technologies needed to boost their growth. In this way, we are contributing to a more diversified and therefore more resilient energy mix.

We are also focused on further enhancing the energy efficiency of our facilities and our products. Greater energy efficiency means less energy use, which in turn means more available energy.

Total is Committed to Providing More Affordable Energy

Promoting access to energy also requires efforts to keep prices down so that energy is affordable to as many people as possible.

Because oil and gas will remain at the center of the world’s energy needs in the decades to come, we aim to keep our products competitively priced by:
  • Making sure all our businesses are as cost-effective as possible so as to enable our customers to benefit from economies of scale.
  • Focusing on projects with low production and processing costs.
We also help the poorest communities gain access to energy by offering them a range of innovative solutions tailored to local conditions that are capable of sustainably meeting their energy needs.

Al-Shaheen: A Giant, Low-Cost Oilfield

Total has acquired an interest in Qatar’s Al-Shaheen offshore concession for a period of 25 years. Due to the low technical costs associated with this giant field, which produces 300,000 barrels of oil per day, it’s possible to achieve economies of scale and produce oil at affordable prices.
