Expanding Natural Gas Marketing
Print
May 15, 08

A long-standing producer, we have also been stepping up our marketing of natural gas.

The increasing liberalization of gas markets worlwide provides customers with a larger freedom of access to suppliers which results in new, more flexible marketing modes than the traditional long-term contracts.

The European Union has been phasing in open competition in its natural gas market since 2000. Since July 1, 2004 all private and public sector businesses can select their natural gas supplier. Retail consumers are able to do so as from July 1, 2007.

Within this context, Total is stepping up its trading, marketing and logistics activities to market its gas productions to new customers, essentially professionnal customers expecting more supply flexibility.

Strong positions on key markets

Total's experience in this area has a solid foundation. In the United Kingdom, where the market has been fully deregulated for more than ten years, we now supply more than 60,000 public and private sector businesses and have developed an array of highly innovative products. Our sales and marketing policy enabled us to quickly become the second supplier to industrial and commercial customers, with about 20% market share.

Through its subsidiary Cepsa Gas Comercializadora in Spain, Total accounts for over 5% of the total market .

Total's 2007 sales in the United-States amounted to 1606 Bcf (45.5  billion cubic meters), whether from its own productions or external resources. The trading business in North America will be further boosted by the marketing of LNG produced by Total in Africa and the Middle East.

In France, Total's 2007 sales amounted to 245 Bcf (7 billion cubic meters) through Total Energie Gaz (Tegaz), its marketing subsidiary, with about 10% of the industrial and commercial customers.
