The GRI was established in 1997 in partnership with the United Nations’ Environment Programme (UNEP).  GRI has developed Sustainability Reporting Guidelines that strive to increase the transparency and accountability of economic, environmental, and social performance and provides all companies and organizations with a comprehensive sustainability reporting framework that is widely used around the world. The Global Reporting Initiative released its G3 guidelines in 2006.
