Total’s action plan is comprised of a range of themes to assist with biodiversity issues:
1. As a first step a mapping tool is in development which places all Total’s sites geographically, along with protected areas as defined by UICN, Unesco and the United Nations. All sites that could have a negative impact on such zones will be responsible for ensuring their management systems address the issue. This new tool which will be periodically updated, as additional information on sensitive areas becomes available, will be a key element in the decision chain for new projects, as well as a valuable tool in case of accident.
2. A corporate guide was developed to assist managers to translate biodiversity issues into everyday operating rules and procedures. It will be tested on several pilot sites within the Group.
3. Our research efforts are intended to continually give us a better understanding of the issues associated with biodiversity, our potential impacts on it and how these can be minimised. We will endeavour to ensure that this knowledge benefits a wide range of stakeholders, including the scientific community, as well as our industry as a whole.
4. Total continues to work with other members of our industry, and external stakeholders, to identify meaningful indicators for biodiversity performance. We will put a priority on where our operations could have an effect on existing protected areas, and what steps we are being taken to minimise these risks.
5. We will work to improve the application of biodiversity considerations into site rehabilitation projects. We will seek to compensate for our impacts with appropriate offset projects.
We will continue to work with governments, NGO’s, international, national and local experts, and local stakeholders and communities to establish meaningful data and suitable procedures.
