In the Chaco region of Bolivia, near the Argentine border, the Itau X1 well is located in semi-tropical forest with sharp seasonal weather variations. Further complicating matters, it stands at the top of a chain of Andean foothills covered with grazing land. Although it was destined to become a gas production site, a decision was made to quickly begin remediation work on 80% of the site to prevent erosion, which is a serious problem in this rough terrain due to heavy tropical downpours in the summer months.
The pre-emptive restoration of vegetation at Itau X1 prevented irreversible damage to the site. This confirmed something we already knew-that time is of the essence when it comes to preventing erosion.
