Recovering used oil

  • In Cameroon, Total has developed a process for treating used oil that successfully addresses local conditions. The unit, called Ecolub, is the only one of its kind in Africa and is designed to respond to the continent's growing environmental concerns. Because the oil to be treated exists in small quantities throughout the region, it was decided to install a small-scale facility on the premises of Société Camerounaise de Dépôt Pétrolier, in Douala, Cameroon.
Ecolub is not a regeneration* unit. Instead, it recycles used oil, which is then mixed with heavy fuel oil and supplied as heating oil to local customers such as cement manu-facturers. Initially, Ecolub only processed used oil generated by Total Cameroun, or nearly 800 metric tons a year. Today, it serves all lubricant users, with a fully-developed policy of product recovery and recycling. The Group is now considering setting up units in other countries where a similar need exists, such as Madagascar and Niger.
