“I took the manager training offered as part of the PATH program, along with two other employees. We upgraded our skills in managing human resources, inventory and fleets and in accounting. For example, the courses explained more clearly how to set up the 2005 charter of accounts.
The training provided for 141 drivers and five drivers’ assistants after Solima was privatized was also very helpful, because driving schools in Madagascar don’t offer dedicated truck driver training. Our drivers are now more aware of the hazards and of the quality of service that’s expected. They wear their uniforms and hard hats, and understand that it’s important. They also pay careful attention to servicing and cleaning their vehicles. We also encourage feedback: every two weeks, we hold drivers’ meetings led by an HSE manager.
Although the PATH program ended at the end of 2005, we hope that it will resume its activities within the Road Transportation Agency. We need more basic training, as well as refresher and upgrading courses. We’re willing to help finance them, but would like to see some new dedicated modules, for instance for garage personnel and welders. And since we’re planning to buy 22 trucks this year, we’d like the drivers to be trained before they get behind the wheel. PATH’s help would be very valuable.” |
