Total has operated the production sharing contract for Block B in southeastern Sudan since 1980, alongside partners Marathon Petroleum Sudan Ltd (32.5%, United States), Kufpec Sudan Ltd (25%, Koweit) and state-owned Sudapet (10%). Security issues in the region caused us to suspend exploration operations in 1985, with the agreement of the Sudanese government. In late December 2004, an agreement was signed with the Sudanese authorities to update the 1980 contract to take account of new international industry standards, particularly in relation to corporate social responsibility, and to establish the terms and conditions for a resumption of operations in Sudan.
Now, recent political developments following the setting up in September 2005 of a government of national unity have led to a much improved situation, especially in the area of Block B. Overall, conditions are improving. Total plans to start operations on site with due regard for the safety situation, in total agreement with the Sudanese authorities. Total has established links with NGOs and experts to learn more about the region and to be ready when it returns to set up development programmes in liaison with the local communities which will suit the local context and needs . Outside expertise will also help us ensure that business is conducted in Sudan in line with Total's Code of Conduct and values.
