With its 2,505,810 sq km, Sudan is the largest country in Africa. It is located in the north-eastern part of the African continent. Its population numbers 33 million inhabitants, 7 million of them living in the capital Khartoum. Sudan's main resources are oil, cotton, sugar, groundnuts...
Sudan was a former British colony and became independent in 1956. In 1983, a conflict started between the North (The Government of Sudan) and the South of the country (The SPLM: Sudan People's Liberation Movement). On January 9, 2005, a peace agreement was signed in Nairobi between the government of Sudan and the SPLM. This agreement ended over two decades of civil war and provides for an autonomous government in South Sudan, after six years, when a self-determination referendum will be held. The new constitution, developed in accordance with the Nairobi agreements, took effect on July 9, 2005 and enables the return of the SPLM to Khartoum. A government of national unity has been in operation since September 2005.
