Financial Transparency
Print

Oil and gas development generates significant revenues for extractive industries and for host countries. This makes financial transparency an absolutely fundamental issue.

With nearly 68% of our production operations located in non-OECD countries, we strongly believe that oil and gas revenues should make a greater contribution to eradicating poverty. That's why we have actively supported the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) from its launch in 2002. We also strive to promote transparency by producing countries and we disclose information on our activities in different countries.

EITI, a defined framework for the oil industry

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) aims to encourage increased transparency in the way oil revenues are managed. This initiative is based on several key measures:

  • Maintaining dialogue between Total management, representatives of host countries, of civil society and EITI representatives.
  • Joining in the work of the EITI and its organizations.
  • Promote the initiative at conferences and in articles.
  • Providing resources and recommendations based on our experience.

In line with our ethics commitments, Total has supported right from its introduction in 2002.
Total was admitted as Alternate to the Board of EITI on September 27, 2007 after being elected by the oil companies that support the global initiative. This election rewards Total's full commitment to the initiative. Jean-François Lassalle has been designated to represent the Group.

As part of our work, we have created dedicated organizations at headquarters, in Exploration & Production and in the subsidiaries concerned.

Promoting EITI to host countries

The principle of transparency may be fundamental, but so too is the sovereignty of countries, which means that transparency cannot be achieved without the voluntary commitment of governments. Total respects this principle and believes that we have to encourage host countries to move forward with EITI implementation. When they agree to the disclosure of individual figures we support them throughout the process, in particular by:

  • Maintaining dialogue between Total management, representatives of host countries, of civil society and EITI representatives.
  • Providing resources and recommendations based on our experience.
