Remediating sites
Print

Total is actively involved in site remediation, rehabilitating certain sites for continued use and making sure that decommissioned sites are suited to their future purpose. In both cases, we ensure that the site does not present a hazard for people or the environment.

Boosting in-house capabilities

Our risk analysis procedure leverages input from outside engineering consultants. We draw on their expertise and the findings of their work to determine the level of cleanup to be performed.

Specialized in-house teams have also been set up:

  • The Site and Soil Remediation Steering Committee (Coremed), which is responsible for informing Health Safety and Environment (HSE) managers about site and soil remediation and encouraging experience sharing.
  • Remtec, the technical committee for soil remediation experts, which acts as an advisor to Coremed and ensures that actions are coordinated.

Sharing best practices

Conducted in partnership with the French Geological and Mining Research Bureau (BRGM), the Remtec+ project reflects our commitment to taking the next step. It involves building a set of in-house guidelines, standardizing the initiatives undertaken by different Group units and defining a common approach to soil remediation based on feedback from around 30 projects that are either underway or have already been completed.

The long-term objective is to identify more targeted actions to be taken as a matter of priority. This means identifying the most appropriate solutions for remediating contaminated soil and sites for which we are responsible, as well as intervening as early as possible when new facilities or projects are being designed or built, to prevent soil and water contamination by using the best technologies and measures available.
