Background and Challenges
Total’s goal is to meet growing energy demand while lessening the impact of energy use on climate change.
Energy transition entails laying the groundwork for a new energy mix and enhancing energy efficiency. Our challenge is to simultaneously explore a number of avenues for supplying energy resources and innovative products, featuring both better options in terms of public health and the environment and produced using as little energy as possible, or even renewable energies.
Commitments
 |
Pushing back the limits of fossil fuels |
| To meet soaring demand for energy, Total is stepping up exploration, increasing the output of producing fields and developing technologies to tap extreme resources. We are also consolidating our positions across the natural gas chain. |
 |
Pursuing our commitment to new energies |
| New energies supplement fossil fuels, and are expected to play a major role in the near future. Total is committed to exploiting biomass and developing photovoltaic solar energy. With our wind power activities now in the observation phase, we are also investing in marine energy. |
 |
Conducting extensive alternative energy R&D |
| Synthetic liquid hydrocarbons could replace conventional fuels and would be equally easy for consumers to use. We are keeping a close watch on developments in this area, while also conducting hydrogen fuel cell R&D. |
