Gas & Power, Developing and Marketing Gas Resources
Gas & Power trades, markets and ships natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). It also generates power and mines and markets coal.
Managing LNG After the Liquefaction Plant
Total is a pioneer and global leader in LNG, a strategic sector for us. We are active in the upstream and midstream of the LNG value chain and are cementing our positions in most major producing regions and consumer markets.
Gas & Power is responsible for the midstream operations of the LNG value chain, after the gas has left liquefaction plants. It oversees LNG trading, marketing, shipping and transmission, and regasification terminals.
Trading
Our current strategy is to expand our midstream natural gas and LNG activities, to provide an outlet for our production both in traditional markets via long-term contracts and in deregulated markets with more flexible marketing agreements.
Gas & Power's trading teams are based in Geneva, Houston, London and Singapore. They also manage our power and LPG trading and coal marketing.
Marketing
Total markets gas, power and coal to end users in France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. In late 2012, we broadened our marketing coverage of Europe by creating two new affiliates: Total Gas & Power North Europe in Belgium and Total Gas & Power Nederland BV in the Netherlands.
In the United Kingdom, we market gas and power to industry and consumers through our affiliate Total Gas & Power Ltd.
In France, we market natural gas through our affiliate Total Energie Gaz (TEGAZ). We also market coal through our affiliate CDF Énergie.
In Spain, we distribute natural gas through CEPSA Gas Comercializadora, in which we have a 35% equity interest.
And in Germany, Total Energie created a marketing affiliate in 2010, called Total Energie Gas GmbH.
Gas Infrastructure
Total is working to build up a gas transmission and storage network, as well as a network of LNG regasification terminals.
In France, our wholly owned affiliate Transport et Infrastructures Gaz France (TIGF) handles transmission in southwestern France, operating a 5,000-kilometer network of gas pipelines.
In South America, we have interests in several natural gas transmission companies in Argentina, Brazil and Chile. Our assets there make up an integrated network of around 9,500 kilometers of pipeline, supplying the Argentinean, Brazilian and Chilean markets from our gas producing regions in Argentina and Bolivia.
LNG Regasification
Total has signed agreements that secure long-term access to LNG regasification capacity on the three continents with major natural gas markets, North America (Mexico and the United States), Europe (France and the United Kingdom) and Asia (India).
Power Generation
As global demand for energy grows, Total has acquired knowledge and expertise in power generation through projects involving cogeneration and combined cycle power plants.
In Abu Dhabi, the Taweelah A1 gas-fired power plant combines power generation and seawater desalination. It is owned by Gulf Total Tractebel Power Co., in which we have a 20% interest. In operation since 2003, the Taweelah A1 plant has a rated generation capacity of 1,600 MW and a seawater desalination capacity of 385,000 cubic meters a day.
In Nigeria, we and our partner state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) are involved in two gas-fired power plants projects that are part of government plans to step up power generation and the local and domestic use of natural gas produced.
Coal Mining
Total has been mining coal in South Africa for nearly 30 years and exports it primarily to Europe and Asia through our affiliate Total Coal South Africa (TCSA). TCSA owns and operates five mines in the country, producing nearly 4.4 million metric tons in 2012.
We continue to study other projects to develop our mining operations.
