Refining & Chemicals: innovating and strengthening our positions and competitiveness

Through its refining and chemicals activities, Total processes crude oil and natural gas to make commercial products. Backed by a policy of innovation and investment, our refineries and petrochemicals sites are among the most competitive in the world.

Total is a global leader in refining and petrochemicals, two highly complementary activities. In response to changing markets in the West and in emerging countries, we are modernizing and developing our production facilities. Improving safety and energy efficiency is our constant concern.

An integrated industrial hub to bolster and expand our positions

Refining employs complex processes to convert crude oil into commercial products such as automotive fuels, lubricants, fuel oils, bitumen and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Total’s petrochemicals activities include base petrochemicals (olefins and aromatics) and their derivatives: polyethylene, polypropylene and styrenics. Its products are used in a wide range of domestic and industrial applications, such as packaging, construction and automobiles.

In our refining and petrochemicals activities, we must meet major challenges every day:

  • ensure safety;
  • secure supply sources;
  • be more flexible in selecting raw materials;
  • innovate and develop new product qualities;
  • comply with ever-stricter environmental requirements.

To improve our efficiency and propose integrated refining and petrochemicals projects that satisfy increasingly strong market demand, we have merged our refining and petrochemicals activities. This consolidation enables us to create a genuine industrial hub, optimize the sharing of know-how and product flows between activities.
In particular, this change allows us to adapt our industrial facilities to mature markets (Europe, United States) to keep them competitive. At the same time, we are developing operations in the growth markets of Asia and the Middle East.

Recent major projects or currently under way

To develop our integrated sites for refining and petrochemicals, Total is investing in high-tech industrial platforms:

• The Daesan site in South Korea, currently being enlarged, combines refining with polyolefin production.
• In Jubail, Saudi Arabia, a refinery and a state-of-the-art petrochemicals complex will use heavy crude oil from the world’s largest deposits starting in 2013.
• The Gonfreville site in Normandy is undergoing modernization, notably to improve its energy efficiency.
