We are No. 1 in Western European refining and marketing (1) and No.1 in African marketing (2) with a worldwide refining capacity of approximately 2.6 million barrels of oil per day and selling approximately 3.7 million barrels of petroleum products per day in 2008. Our integrated refining base - we have interests in 25 refineries and directly operate 12 - is one of Europe's most competitive and is fully compliant with the new European Union product specification standards.
Total operates a network of almost 16,425 service stations worldwide mostly in Europe and Africa. Total is one of the leading marketers based on refining capacity and refined product sales across the combined six largest western European markets (France, Spain, Benelux, United Kingdom, Germany and Italy). Outside Europe, we are focusing on fast-growing markets such as Africa, where we are the largest marketer with a market share of 11% and over 3,500 retail stations in more than 40 countries. Total is also present in nearly 20 countries in the Asia-Pacific region as well as in nearly 20 countries in Latin America and The Caribbean.
Refineries also contribute to producing a broad range of specialty products, such as lubricants, LPG, jet fuel, special fluids, bitumen and petrochemical feedstock marketed in nearly 150 countries. Total is among the leading companies in the European specialty products market, notably for lubricants and bitumen and jet fuel. Total is also among the leading international LPG distributors (1) and is pursuing the expansion of this activity on the global market. Total is the European leader in bitumen (1), including strong positions in France and Germany.
Total also plays an active part in the promotion of renewable energies and alternative fuels and has strengthened its research and testing programs for fuel cell technology and fuel reformulation.
