The Chemicals segment includes Base Chemicals, with petrochemicals and fertilizers, and Specialty Chemicals, with the Group's rubber processing, resins, adhesives and electroplating activities.

Total is one of the world's largest integrated chemical producers (1). In 2008, the Chemicals segment sales amounted to 20.15 B€. Europe accounted for 62% of the segment's overall sales for 2008 and North America for 18% with the remaining sales primarily attributable to Asia (14 %) and Latin America (2%).


Chemicals operations cover major sectors:

Total's Base Chemicals activities encompass petrochemicals as well as fertilizers.


  • The petrochemicals activities of Total Petrochemicals include base petrochemicals (olefins and aromatics) and their derivatives (polyethylene, polypropylene and styrenics). Its products are used in a wide range of domestic and industrial applications, including packaging, construction and automobiles.
