Promoting progress and the future of energy

One of France’s largest corporations and the world's fifth largest publicly-traded integrated international oil and gas company (1), Total is committed to meeting growing energy demand while consistently acting as a responsible corporate citizen.

To meet growing energy needs on a long-term basis, Total’s strategy involves deploying a sustainable growth model combining the acceptability of its activities with a sustained program of profitable investments.

Our ambitions

  • Preparing for future energies, i.e. innovating and pursuing our research efforts to support the development of new energies and to contribute to moderating demand.
  • Developing our corporate policy based on responsibility, diversity, mobility and fairness in every country in which we operate.
  • Meeting sustainable development challenges by placing greater value on natural resources, protecting the environment, adapting our activities to the culture of the host country and engaging in dialogue with local communities; and
  • Cultivating and strengthening the relationships with our shareholders by providing regular and transparent information and communication.

All aspects of the petroleum industry

With operations in more than 130 countries, Total engages in all aspects of the petroleum industry, including Upstream operations (oil and gas exploration, development and production, LNG) and Downstream operations (refining, marketing and the trading and shipping of crude oil and petroleum products).

Total also produces base chemicals (petrochemicals and fertilizers) and specialty chemicals for the industrial and consumer markets. In addition, Total has interests in the coal mining and power generation sectors, as well as a financial interest in Sanofi-Aventis.

Total is the world’s fifth-largest international oil and gas producer, with production of 2.35 million barrels of oil equivalent per day and proved reserves of 11.4 billion barrels of oil equivalent as of end-2011 (2). Our portfolio of assets is evenly distributed among the world’s leading petroleum provinces.

We are also a world leader in gas production and marketing and in power generation. Moreover, we are actively preparing for the future of energy by progressively expanding our energy offerings and developing complementary next generation energy activities (solar, biomass, nuclear).

Customer-focused brands

With nearly 15, 000 service stations worldwide, Total is No 1 in Western European refining/marketing and No. 1 in African marketing. We also have a strong presence in the Mediterranean Basin and are moving into growth markets in Southeast Asia.

Our marketing operations leverage not only TOTAL our flagship brand, whose solid reputation is based on quality service and local presence, but also our strategically positioned Elf, Elan and AS24 brands.

Innovative chemicals improving the quality of life

Total's chemicals business is a leader in each of its markets: base chemicals (petrochemicals and fertilizers) and specialty chemicals for the industrial and consumer markets (rubber processing, adhesives, resins and electroplating).

Because its products have a broad impact on peoples’ lives, Total's Chemicals business innovates constantly to anticipate the needs of an ever-changing society.
