Group Organization
Taking into account all its subsidiaries and affiliates, Total is the fifth largest publicly-traded integrated international oil and gas company in the world (1) with operations covering the entire oil and gas chain, in more than 130 countries.
Three Major Business Segments
Total's worldwide operations are conducted through three business segments: Upstream, Downstream and Chemicals.
- Upstream includes oil and gas exploration and production, Gas & Power and other energy sources.
- Downstream covers refining and marketing, along with trading and shipping.
- Chemicals comprises various activities, including Base Chemicals (Petrochemicals, and Fertilizers) and Specialties mainly for the industrial market.
The operating segments of the Group are assisted by centralized corporate functions: Finance, Legal, Ethics, Insurance, Strategy and Risk Assessment, Human Resources and Corporate Communications
The Executive Committee and the Management Committee
- The Executive Committee (COMEX), under the responsibility of the Chief Executive Officer, is the primary decision-making body of the Group. It implements the strategy formulated by the Board of Directors and authorizes related investments.
- The Management Committee (CODIR) of the Group facilitates coordination among the divisions and monitors the operating results and activity reports of these Divisions.

- Supply-Marketing: Benoît Luc, Momar Nguer, Jérôme Paré, Jérôme Schmitt.
Since March 1, 2008, Total's senior management organization has been revamped. A Corporate Affairs Division has been created, with several related functions reporting to it.
