Group Presentation

Our business principles

Total conducts business in accordance with the bedrock values and principles set out in our Code of Conduct. The Code encapsulates senior management’s commitments, presents the principles adopted and shared by all Total companies, and lists the internationally recognized documents to which we refer. It also details the business principles to be followed in dealing with our stakeholders and the rules of individual behavior that our employees are expected to apply.

As part of a continuous improvement process, we have developed dedicated resources to put our business principles into practice.

Employees

The Ethics Committee, responsible for ensuring that all employees are familiar with the Code of Conduct and providing them with the assistance they need to apply it day to day, has devised an appropriate ethics process to fulfill its mission.

Fundamental principles

Human rights

Based on the corresponding principles of the UN’s Global Compact, we have created a dedicated Human Rights process to ensure respect for human rights within our sphere of influence, including in challenging situations. This process takes account of the United Nations special representative’s latest recommendations.

Integrity

Integrity is a fundamental aspect of all contractual and business relationships, especially in the current economy. We have developed dedicated processes in the areas of anti-corruption and free competition.

Specific area

The environment and industrial safety

To manage our impact, we implement an array of programs and actions in the areas of the environment and industrial safety.

Human resources

With a work force of more than 100,000, we deploy a human resources process that includes promoting fairness and diversity and developing skills while ensuring compliance with labor legislation.

Community relations

With operations in many countries, Total emphasizes good community relations, in keeping with our local content and local community development processes.

Operating in sensitive contexts

Our operations in certain countries, such as Myanmar, Sudan and Nigeria, can elicit questions or criticism from civil society; we are stepping up vigilance processes in those countries.

Financial transparency

Civil society frequently has questions about local development and the transparency of extractive industry revenues. Total is involved in a cooperative process based on the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

Governance

Introducing and monitoring governance processes naturally involves senior management and the Board of Directors, whose organization and procedures are subject to specific governance actions.

Resources and partnerships

Organizations involved

Although all levels of management are directly responsible for deploying and monitoring business ethics processes, certain internal organizations such as the Ethics Committee and the Compliance and Corporate Audit Departments play a special role.

Methods and tools

Internal resources such as the intranet, Université Total programs, ethical assessments, internal controls, and whistleblowing processes are involved in the various information, verification and listening steps common to all our ethics processes.

Initiatives and partnerships

To support the application of our business principles, we reference a certain number of initiatives, such as the United Nations Global Compact, the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR). We also have partnerships with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA), the Institute of Business Ethics (IBE) and the Global Business Initiative on Human Rights (GBIHR).
