Gas and Power
TotalFinaElf is pursuing a strategy of active integration in the sector of gas-fired power generation. In the coming years, natural gas and gas-fired electricity are forecast to continue growing faster than other forms of energy. In this context, TotalFinaElf can look forward to expanding its activities and making profitable use of its reserves.
In Latin America, TotalFinaElf continued to strengthen its presence in the downstream gas sector in the Southern Cone, a rapidly growing area where the Group ranks among the leading producers with the largest reserves of natural gas. In 2000, the Group acquired a 9.7% interest in the Brazilian section of the Bolivia-Brazil gas pipeline. It will thus be able to supply rapidly developing markets in south and southeastern Brazil from its gas reserves in Bolivia.
TotalFinaElf also signed an agreement with TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. with a view to acquiring the Canadian company's interests in the Southern Cone transmission network.
In November 2000, TotalFinaElf concluded an agreement with U.S.-based AES Corporation enabling the Group to acquire for a total amount of around $ 650 M, all power generation assets in Argentina owned by Chile's Gener.
In the Gulf, after an international call for tenders in Abu Dhabi, TotalFinaElf strength-ened its position in the gas chain by successfully bidding for the acquisition and extension of Taweelah A1, a power plant and desalination plant fired by natural gas. The Group will have a 20% interest in this project.
In addition, Phase 1 of the Dolphin project (TotalFinaElf 24.5% in Dolphin Energy Ltd.) to export 2 Bcf/d of Qatari gas to the UAE and Oman was launched in March 2001.
Coal
Already active in this sector through subsidiary TESA, which exports 6 Mt of coal annually from South Africa, TotalFinaElf strengthened its position in international coal trading with its September 2000 acquisition of CDF Energie, the top-ranked French trader with sales of 2 Mt to the industry.
Renewable energy
TotalFinaElf continued its studies and development of projects to generate power from wind, with particular focus on French coastal areas.

PROVIDING SOLAR ENERGY FOR ISOLATED SITES
TotalFinaElf's Total Energie subsidiary, which ranks among the leading world suppliers of turnkey solar energy complexes, designs, installs and operates solar power-production systems in a wide range of countries for a wide range of applications.
In France's overseas departments and territories and in developing countries, Total Energie provides electricity for household use and for pumping water in isolated areas. The company is also developing industrial applications, notably in the telecommunications sector, with marketing possibilities in both developing and industrialized nations.
A 5,000 W solar-powered pumping system can supply 1,000 persons with drinking water from a 10-to-30-meter deep well. Likewise, a 50 W personal solar-energy system could supply the lighting needs of a family.
Currently, Total Energie's pumping systems equip more than 1,000 wells or drill sites in Africa and provide two million inhabitants of villages with drinking water.
